Webcast site
The webcast happens at Vaughnlive.tv/Gil_on_VL . If Vaughnlive is unavailable for some reason, CamUp.tv might be used as an alternate site.
Webcast Schedule
The normal webcast schedule is Monday nights, 10pm-2am US Eastern time. Following the "live" cast, there usually is a replay of an older archived cast. Other casts may be scheduled on short or no advance notice.
What the Cast Is About
Gil's World of Music is a place to hear and discuss a wide range of music from the earliest recordings up through current. It is a place to learn as well as to listen. Viewers may be hearing some of this music for the first time, given that much of what gets played here is 40 to 70 years old. Feel free to ask about what is on.
what the cast is not about
While the cast does reflect our community values, we don't usually debate religion, politics, or other issues of the day. This isn't a place to gripe about other people, places, or things. We don't do therapy or causes. Unlike many Internet venues, we don't condone vulgar speech or inconsiderate behavior. There are a lot of good people who participate in our webcasts who actually know how to conduct themselves in a public setting. We are not going to waste time with people who are hateful, offensive, disruptive, lewd, or infantile. People who don't display appropriate decorum will be removed from chat.
Past Shows
The first webcast was August 2, 2009 on justin.tv. The first "official" Gil cast occurred July 30, 2010. The cast relocated from JTV to VaughnLive on June 24, 2014. You can see the complete list of past shows and themes here.
What about Licensing?
Some of the music that gets played on Gil's World of Music is public domain and/or royalty-free. Additionally, the cast often has a strong educational component to it, as we discuss music and social history. Educational endeavors are viewed favorably by copyright law. In other cases, Gil's World of Music would be happy to pay reasonable royalties for a 4-hour a week cast whose audience averages around 35 people (estimate as of early 2021). Unfortunately, the music industry makes no provision for the small hobbyist webcaster. The cheapest licensing option through SoundExchange and the performance rights organizations (ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC) runs to almost $1600 per year as of early 2013. That would be like a child's lemonade stand being forced to go through the same licensing as a full-time, permanent, for-profit business. Granted, Gil isn't a child but neither is Gil receiving any revenue from the webcasts, unlike the kids who operate the lemonade stand. It's a labor of love. Caught between a requirement to pay royalties for streaming music and no opportunity to do so at a rate consistent with the scale of the streaming activity, Gil's World of Music and other similar webcasts are put in an untenable position. The music industry ought to recognize that small-audience, no-revenue webcasts such this one should be exempted from a licensing rate sheet geared to professional webcasters with much larger audiences. Or we should be permitted to pay reasonable fees (micropayments) drawn against a deposit account much like drivers who use the iPass system for toll roads. In the meantime, Gil's World of Music will not voluntarily succumb to music industry discrimination. The channel will not pay extortionate fees. We will continue to monitor the situation with the hope that the music industry ultimately will accommodate webcasters like us.
Who is Gil, anyway?
Your host Gil is a child of the 50s who just loves good music and can't keep it to himself. He's married and has three adult offspring. He used to be a Business Systems Analyst for a large local corporation. His current "day job", so to speak, is serving as an elected official of his municipality. Even though the webcast is usually apolitical, he is very concerned about what's going on in the world and in the US today. He has a deep and growing appreciation for the genius of the American Constitution and the circumstances that begat it. He considers himself to be a deist and a conservative libertarian.
The cast originates from a basement room in St Louis County, Missouri USA. He's been doing these webcasts weekly since late 2010. He did college radio back in the 70s, but otherwise has no media experience. He thinks it's a little bit weird writing about himself in the third person. And no, "Gil" is not his real name.
