Among the salient points are
- JTV is adopting the HLS standard. (It stands for http live streaming.) HLS will result in overall improvements to the JTV viewing experience, especially on mobile devices.
- The 128kbps MP3 limitation we've been complaining about is baked in to the HLS spec. I suspected that might be the reason that JTV was reducing the audio quality (i.e., that it was a side effect of what else they were doing, as opposed to some arbitrary decision that they were making), but they never said that before in public that I'm aware of.
- Full implementation will occur around the end of November.
- JTV is not going to (and should not be expected to) support the peculiarities of Windows XP, given the age and status of the OS.
