I'm not going to identify this viewer by name. His issues are his own. I respect his point of view and I believe I understand his particular situation. I am pretty certain he is NOT complaining about me, the mods, any of our other regular viewers or chatters. I think his problem is mainly with the occasional troll we get in chat, and the inability to permanently get rid of them.
I wanted to share my response because I think it's generally applicable. I've edited it to remove any direct reference to his name.
With the one person you were talking about, who [tried to impersonate you], we knew that wasn't you, and I think we ended up banning that person from the channel. JTV does have an avenue for redress as it is against their Terms of Service for one user to impersonate another. However, it is up to the aggrieved party (you, in this case) to file a complaint.
No one, not online and not in real life, can PREVENT someone else from behaving badly. One can only react to bad behavior by identifying it and then dealing with it as best as one can. That is what I try to do during my webcasts.
At the risk of raising your ire, I feel like I ought to say this, for what it's worth: When you first joined my channel, your name did catch my attention, and not in a good way. I ban people simply for having an offensive or vulgar name, as is stated in the Community Standards section of my channel page. The name you chose for yourself kind of falls into that category. However, you interacted in the chat well, so I decided to overlook the uncomfortable name.
Just as a bit of unsolicited advice, why not pick a name that draws less unwanted attention to itself, something that might cause you less grief from people that don't appreciate where you're coming from?"
In summary: Yes, trolls can be unpleasant. Sometimes you just need to have a thick skin. That's life. Not all bad behavior can be eradicated. That's also life. Don't add to the problem by being trollish yourself, and that includes the choice of a user name.
Maybe I was wasting my breath (or type, in this case) by responding. There's a piece of me that wants to offer help where I can. The recipient can take it or leave it, his choice. I did my part. Now I'm ready to move on.
"I'm sorry to see you go. In a medium like this , there will always be trolls and other people that act rudely, thoughtlessly, maliciously, or otherwise inappropriately. Come to think of it, that's true in everyday interactions in the real world, too, although it is easier to misbehave in an anonymous environment.
